DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Church
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2026-02-15
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear the title track of a Bebop Beatniks album recorded live in Brookland, Arkansas.
As you all know I love live music and I play a lot of live music recordings on Something Blue. And I do have a Bebop Beatniks album compiled from a number of concerts that we played from 2016 to 2019. The album is called "Church" and all the songs on the album are originals. I picked the title track to play today.
Now sometimes I write a song that's just poppin' with that bounce and that swing that makes you jump. "Church" isn't like that. It's a beautiful song at a slow tempo with interesting changes and a gorgeous melody. Believe me, it's the slower songs that are harder to write and harder to play.
"Church" was recorded at the Brookland United Methodist Church on May 29, 2016, and featured
Kevin Tinker - trumpet
Paul Nunis - bass
Hairy Larry - piano
Sid Davis - trumpet
Joseph Curtis - flugelhorn
Matt Burnside - xylophone
Jay Shepherd - guitar
and
Chris Isom - drums
All fine outstanding Arkansas musicians with ties to ASU.
After the head we'll hear the brass triumvirate, Kevin on trumpet, Joseph on flugelhorn, and Sid on trumpet, burning it up, followed by some absolutely amazing guitar work played by Jay Shepherd. Then Jay and I play an improvised duet and the triumvirate takes it out with improvised harmonies.
Needless to say, I'm very pleased with this recording and I hope you enjoy it.
Ok now, here's Bebop Beatniks playing "Church".
